The Africana studies major is designed for students with an interest in shaping the world.

In the Africana studies major, students will understand the complexities, struggles, and successes of people of African descent that exist throughout the world.

Through an approach that combines the social sciences with those of the humanities, Africana studies critically examines the societies and peoples of Africa and African descent and their relationship to the world.

Concentrations

The department offers concentrations in either the humanities or social sciences within the major.

Double Majors

Students are welcome to double major in Africana studies and another major and should decide on a major in their sophomore year. Examples of double majors include economics, communications, education, English literature or writing, history, sociology, theatre arts, and urban studies.

Prospective students who have not earned college credits since graduating from high school with a diploma or GED should consult this section for information on admission to the University of Pittsburgh.
